Peter is essentially myself at age 12: a bit of a loner, a quiet, nerdy kid, who definitely had difficulty making friends. Around 7th grade (where this comic primarily takes place at first), I went the entire year with only one single friend I could rely on. The rest of the school (and kids around the neighborhood) just seemed to have it out for me.
That period of my life was the original inspiration for this comic.
